National Art Honor Society

What is the National Art Honor Society?

NAHS is designed specifically for high school students in grades 9-12. In 1978, the National Art Education Association began the National Art Honor Society program specifically for high school students, for the purpose of inspiring and recognizing those students who have shown an outstanding ability in art. The NAHS strives to aid members in working toward the attainment of the highest standards in art areas, and to bring art education to the attention of the school and community.

How do I become a member?

Membership is on an invite-only basis.  Eligible students will receive letters in homeroom during the first few weeks of the new school year with membership information.  Students can become eligible by doing one of the following:

  • Take Art Major I and at least one other art course, and earn an average grade of 90% or higher in all art courses

  • Earn a grade of 95% or higher in Art Major I

Eligible students will also exhibit strength of character, a strong work ethic, and a desire to give back to their community.  ***To remain eligible, members must maintain close to a 90% average in all art classes and are expected to maintain other academic grades to an acceptable degree.

What is required of our members?

Our main goal is to share our passion and talent for art with the community.  This is done in large part through various community service activities.  Members must complete a minimum of 20 hours community service for each year of membership.  They will also be officially inducted into the Society through an annual induction process consisting of a ceremony and art exhibition.  To remain eligible, members must uphold the chapter's constitution.  To see this document, click here: Chapter Constitution

What community service activities do NAHS members participate in?

  • Face painting at various district and community seasonal festivals

  • Teaching art courses to elementary school students as part of Simmon's Elementary School Discovery Time program

  • A variety of school-based functions such as Feed-A-Friend

  • An annual mural project in a wing of the HHHS building

  • Promoting the arts within the HS during the annual Arts Crawl

  • Multiple mural projects throughout the community, including the children's ward of Abington Memorial Hospital, and the newly-painted Jarrett Nature Center Building

  • The Memory Project: creating portraits for children from underprivileged nations
